He’s also currently one of the three – the others being guitarist Steve Jones and drummer Paul Cook – who are in favor of Danny Boyle’s in-the-works biopic series, Pistol, the petulant holdout being, of course, Rotten. Matlock is the forgotten guy, but the guy – it has been said – who was responsible for much of the melody that powered Johnny Rotten’s scathing and super-smart lyrics. The bassist sought professional help as his pain began to worsen, visiting several osteopaths and top back pain specialists: "Once while on tour with the Sex Pistols in Finland I had to break off and go and see an osteopath as I was really struggling. "Back then when the pain came on it was normally an excuse to have another port and brandy - medicinal of course," he joked.

With his busy recording and touring schedule, the star shrugged off the pain rather than seek professional medical advice. Matlock, who began his music career as a teenager, has been suffering with chronic back pain since his mid-twenties. And I wear a surgical support belt underneath my shirt." Before I go on stage I take ibuprofen and rub Voltarol on to my lower back to help ease the pain and inflammation. But if I'm performing I just battle through.
"It's not just the back pain, all the opposing muscles go into spasm to compensate. At one stage I was getting quite considerable attacks all the time and it could go on for six weeks or more. "It's like sciatica - the pain travels right down my legs - and I can't do anything. "The pain is totally debilitating and when it strikes I can't move," he told UK's The Mirror.
